I like very much the way in which you describe the process of "reading" the dove, but it seems to me that there is still a question hovering (as it were) above your discussion: is this, in fact, "symbolism" as we usually mean the term or is it something else? You clearly understood what both Ohly and Hugh were trying to show us, but you also suggest in your footnote that there is something more at stake in thinking about the way in which medieval authors like Hugh used animal and (Ohly's actual point) color imagery.
